Plot:
Junji Ito: Maniac, which adapts 20 of Ito's short stories, is able to bring to life both famous tales like "Tomei" and "Kubitsuri Kikyuu" (The Hanging Balloons) and lesser-known ones like "The Bully."
Although there are some scary parts, the anime version of the story leans more heavily toward humor than the original plot, and it really pays off.
Awful horror suddenly surfaces in other episodes, such as episode three, which adapts the well-known short story "The Hanging Balloon."
Each narrative that follows the one that played before it is built with surprises and decisions that are artistic in their own right.
The connecting theme that unites each story is only discovered as you continue viewing and pays off at the series' conclusion, much like any excellent compendium or collection of works.
My nocturnal trek became terrifying on its own because "Alley" and "The Story of the Mysterious Tunnel."
But "Ice Cream Bus," which plays on every parent's worst dread, is the most cunning. Even while you may watch the series over time, the binge format has the advantage of allowing you to see little details that tie the storylines together.
Furthermore, every episode has a joyful-sounding opening theme at the conclusion that contrasts sharply with the gruesome narratives being portrayed.
Review:
With solid line work and a mellow color combinations reminiscent of Ito's original black and white pictures, the animation has a vintage appearance and an eerie music is blended with creepy tunes.
Strong voice acting supports this and aids in conveying the terror; the diverse cast makes even the most unbelievable decisions seem plausible.
In almost every story, a strange event that leads to a violent death or a shocking show of bodily horror is presented. However, the intention is not to scare but to disturb.
For the uninitiated, there are a few moments that may give them nightmares, but nothing that will cause them to leap out of their seats.
Basically, every short has a solid aural and visual foundation from the beginning. Things sort of ruined by the strange cutting and poor storyline and some of the stories are just plain uninteresting.
Conflicts either don't resolve or come to a disappointing conclusion while others have a good beginning but end abruptly without any sense of resolution.
But I particularly enjoyed the way the show explored the different types of horror, and how it managed to be both terrifying and thought-provoking at the same time.
Overall great show to binge watch for someone new to Junji Ito's work and into disturbing horror stories.
Good Morning Veronica
A Brazilian Netflix series about a cop who witnesses a suicide and wants to solve the case along with other issues pertaining to women these days.
Before proceeding with the blog, I would like to say that it will be a very heavy blog as in there are some important issues that I will be discussing like abuse, murders and rape. Spoiler alert. Proceed with caution.
Let's buckle up!!
The show has some good points with a strong woman as a lead who is working to find ways to help other women in distress. The issues that women has to face are brutally abusive.
While watching the show all I hoped was one day there will be a time where women are safe and heard.
The show has some grasping issues - domestic violence, murders, sexism, illegally selling private images. We will get to it more ahead. The cinematography is also something I really enjoyed. Tainá Müller, who plays Verônica has done phenomenon job of portraying the character.
This is going to be a long read, please bear with me!!!
You would want to watch it after reading...
The show starts with "good morning, Verônica".
Verônica is a police clerk working in homicide. She has a loving husband and two children.
She is a fierce young woman standing up for what's right, always trusts her gut - as she should!👑
A woman comes in with a complaint. Unable to attain justice to what she went through, she killed herself in the police station with the gun she found on the floor, during the commotion an old man created. Verônica quickly realises the woman's plan and rushes to save her but she is too late.
This horrific scene led Verônica to wonder what happened with her and started to dig up her case.
She was cheated by her boyfriend whom she had met via an online dating site. Anita, a stuck up, can't handle the fact that Verônica, a police clerk, wanted to help her with the case.
Gave her countless warning to back off, but our queen here didn't listen to her. Ver, then declared on news that if any woman ever in distress, can contact her. Listening to this, a woman named Janete, living with a monster i.e her husband, feels the need to call her and she does, secretly.
Coming to Janete, she is a beautiful young lady living with her boyfriend/husband.(it's not really clear) live a very tensed life. The couple wants to have kids and grow their family but they are unable to do so. Her partner Claúdio, is a military officer.
The show from this point onwards is very graphic to even explain. Claúdio is a terrible human being. He abuses his girlfriend/wife when she doesn't listen to her, tortures her in unimaginable ways.
Not only this, he forces Janete to take part in his cult activities, picking up young girls from the bust station, bringing them to an abandoned ranch, and performing horrible things on them. Janete is made to sit on a chair with box on her head.
That phone call made Ver worried about Janete's situation. So she decided to help her.
Ver meets up with one more victim of online dating. She has the same scar on her lips like the woman who killed herself had. The team was determined to find this online fraud.
Ver and her team had some red herrings. After some detailed police work, they caught the guy! (he was released later on the show)
We also come to know the backstory of the main character. Verônica's father was wrongly accused which made him take drastic steps.
One day when Ver was away, her father shot her mother. After years, we see that Ver's father is in a nursing home, almost paralysed. She visits him to give him some company. Ver's godfather, her father's best friend, is the cheif of police where Ver works.
They have a loving relationship. Carvana will soon retire and hopes that Ver applies to become a detective.
One night as Janete is watching Marie Kondo on TV, Claúdio tell her to get ready indicating that it's time to go girl hunting. But this time, Janete had radio connectivity with Ver. She had given her some earning with tracking device and a wire, so she could her the conversation between the couple. The couple drove to the same ranch. He did what he had to do and left off. Janete removes the box from her head and helps the lady she saw hanging from the ceiling. They try to escape. Janete was seeking help from Ver (she was behind them the whole car ride upto the ranch only for her to take a different turn which led her far away from the victim) Claúdio soon stops them and shoots the girl. Ver is helpless and so is Janete. Claúdio, the next day as a safety measure, locks all the doors and windows and puts up CCTV cameras around house to monitor his partner's every move. During the last night's hassle, Ver gets a concussion and can be seen waking up from her bed. She was attacked my masked men during the car ride. She suspects the police is behind this, especially Anita.
My thoughts:
There's too much going on the show. Anita's secret - she works with the commissioner (corrupted) and for some reasons, they want Verô out of the scene. I'm not going to explain this scene because it's a crucial part of the series. I know I have almost explained everything then why not this? The thing is, this is rooted way deeper - Verô's past and how her father was framed, all this we come to know. Some things are better if you watch it.
What happened with Janete? Well, let me tell you one thing, it's going to give me nightmares for the rest of my life. If you are brave enough to watch it, I'm giving you a heads-up - it's not going to be pretty, Many graphics scenes.
I think I said what this show is about and how I felt about it. The thing is, this is something that someone, around this globe, some woman, goes through. The scary part is - it's reality. Oh by the way, this show is based on a true story!!!
The awaited kdrama starring Nam Joo Hyuk and Jung Yu mi is as confusing as it can get. I've done my best to explain it.
1st episode is extremely confusing! You'll have no idea what is going on.
Eun young is the main protagonist who can see dead people and jellyfish like creatures.
The first scene is a flashback with with Eun young sitting in front of a teacher who's asking her to explain a painting.
Eun young is silent and doesn't say anything. Besides her sits her mother who holds her hand and when lets it go we see jelly slimy thing in eun youngs hand.
The narrator (older eun young) explains that every living being create such jelly but before they can hurt anyone they're crushed to jelly.
Soon, eun young goes outside and her dad hugs her and starts to sob while her mother is standing far. Then theres a creepy scene where we see how her mother gets turned to jelly and dissolves.(she could see her dead mother).
Flash forward to few years later. Eun young is all grown up, shes a nurse at a school.
The starts off with few guys setting up a candles for the guy who's bullying them into doing it. He's about to propose to a girl who everyone calls jellyfish ( real name aa raa).
She's up on the terrace with a guy and she tells him she'll be down so so he leaves. Another guy Seung won wants to confess to a raa and he's rushing to find her when suddenly something happens to his neck.
He goes to a school nurse and she removes a jelly thats shaped in a heart. She tells him to go to the hospital to get it checked but he refuses and rushes to find a raa. Eun young goes to his homeroom teacher In pyo(naam joon hyuk)
Hes the grandson of the person who started the school. Hes a homeroom teacher who has a problem with one of his leg. When eun young meets him she notices he has some sort of aura around him.
Later they both end up in the basement (which we see in a scene that no one is allowed in)
In the basement there are many such jellies and only Eun young can see them and shes using her sword to kill them while In pyo thinks shes crazy.
They discover some sort of altar. Eun young says she doesn't have time for this and rushes to find Seung gwom. In pyo is fascinated by the altar and he reads the inscription on it.
It says that this was a pond where young lovers came when they lost their love and drowned themselves. There were people who dumped bodies in there of people they murdered so that it would look like suicide.
To make matters worse fish and toads and lizards that feed on these corpses became bigger. Thats why the pond was filled with sand and dust.
To kill these beasts you need to cut off their heads
Above the basement students have become zombie like and are trying to jump off the rooftop. (Seems like the only students who were possesed were the ones who lost their love).
Eun young goes up and tries to save them with her skills. Suddenly the ground below has opened and theres a huge monster (that looks like a frog). Eun young shoots it with pills to kill it and it eventually dies.
She then holds hands with In pyo to transfer some of his energy to her.
Next episode we see two students trying to steal question papers.
Heo wan su(lucky)kang min u(ruckus). They're always together and eun young can see a bond always tied to their heads.
Eun young has a friend she made at a hospital she works at. Shes her best friend and someone who eun young sees as her mother.
We see Eun young telling her that Heo wan su and Kang min u were born with that jelly connection which is connected with both their heads.
She says its not right for friends to be tethered like that and thats shes seen one of the two end up dead before.
Eun Young's friend tells her to shave the heads as the jelly might've attached to the hair. Next day with a raas help (a ra tells ruckus to shave his head as he would look better. He listens to her because he has a crush on her).
The jelly connection remains even after he has shaved his head.
In pyo says tying ends of the hair might help. So he starts teaching eun young and araa how to make intricate knots.
Meanwhile lucky and ruckus are in the ping pong club and decide to sneak into a girls school and steal cushions. They do that and by mistake also steal a dead girls cushion.
Next day in a classroom all boys are crying. And when eun young enters she asks the rest to leave. She sees one girl crying too, turns out she the dead girl and she's holding her cushion.
She suddenly starts to grow bigger and bigger and eun young stabs her with her sword and the girl bursts into hearts. Everyone stops crying. Eun young takes the cushion and burns it.
Lucky and ruckus are on the rooftop smoking and a raa comes to call them and tells them the nurse wants to see them. When the go there.
Eun young hits them with her sword they faint and soon she and in pyo start typing their hair ends. The plan works and eun young is successful and untethered their heads.
Another teacher( Mackenzie who is from America) who works there also can see these jellies. Eun young realizes it and she confronts him.
He tells her if instead of killing them she sold them she would be rich. Eun young tells him to stop selling them and also stop trying to steal in pyos defensive jelly that protects him from bad ones. Hes says he won't stop and leaves.
While Eun young goes on searching Mackenzie's place and her friend Hwa su keeps on digging his past from the internet, In pyo goes to find out about the company that his grandfather told him to call every once in a while for disinfecting the basement.
Because of the supernatural plant she touched at Mackenzie's place she gets rashes on her face which she heals by taking energy from love locks
She goes with In pyo to his fathers library where eun young reads from a book which says "if you can can control the breathing hole then you can turn luck in your favor and control the nation"
Theres a new transfer student and she can too see few weird looking creatures and she eats them. Suddenly everyone at school has rash. She tells eun young that mites can be destroyed and she eats one in front of her.
She says mites are immigrating towards this school because the ground is not stable and asks if they did anything to the Apji stone(altar from episode 1).
She lives dies and relives her life there(shes not a normal human). She's a mites killer.
Later in the 6th episode Eun young and In pyo drop her off at her facility where she came from. When dropping her off In pyo asks her where she lived before the facility.
Hye min tells them that it was before the school was built. The villagers were very scared and worried that the school was built on this ground. She says thats theres a hole where air flows. She tells them there was a pond before and people kept going there and thats why it was closed. Theres a energy there which fuels with the laughter of children.(in the school the children every morning are made to do the laughing exercise).
In pyos grandfather wanted to channel that large energy. Thats why the villagers were worried about how he would control thr world.
To those who were strong the energy didn't have any effect but those who were weak the energy drew them in like the ones who jumped in the pond.
Hye-Min’s surgery is a success but the surgeons find out how strange it is that she hasn’t got a belly button.
In her stomach they find a strange creature with a Chinese scripture on it reading “Guje”. This means saving others in trouble. Eun-Young can’t actually see this as she’s lost her power.
In the finale we see that the heads of lucky and ruckus again are connected when they go to the basement.
We find out that the school wasfwas built forSfor Happiness the company and students would jump in the pool constantly and thats thats how they got the energy.
The jellies seem to be feeding on bad energy and there is nobody there to stop them.
Writing a letter of resignation, Eun-Young heads back to school as there is a huge flood of jelly that starts flushing through the rooms.
Eun-Young can’t see this because she's lost her powers.
In Pyo heads to the fishing site in the pictures featuring Ilgwant the company but finds it abandoned.
Ilgwang is not there but it turns out Safe Happiness are the ones involved in everything.
They’re they're the bad ones and Mackenzie and Ga young the other teacher are members of this group.
Ilgwang consists of the ladies Eun young knows from therapy sessions of her friend. Eun-Young goes totto and tells the leader she’s not going to fight for them anymore.
Eun-Young decides to destroy the school by opening up the Apji stone and letting the jellies flow out.
As they open up the stone, Eun-Young suddenly gets her powers back and sees all the jellies floating around. Everything starts shaking, she goes upstairs to get her sword.
The school shakes, leading to a massive jelly heart plunging down to the ground outside
Fast forward we see that the school seems healed now and the students back to full health.
Radi the student meets and speaks to Eun-Young in her office. She reveals that her Mum can see ghosts and asks for help. As Eun-Young smiles (very awkwardly), she realizes she is not alone in seeing jellies.
My Thoughts:
Well, this kdrama is not something everyone would like. Personally I liked it. It has a quirky sense of humour with supernatural elements.
Even though the main character of the kdrama is Eun young, Nam joon Hyuks character In pyo steals the spotlight. The children in school seemed really good in playing their characters.
If you're into something extremely weird with everything confusing and seeing gross looking creatures that are somehow even cute then this show is for you.
There was a hint of romance between our two leads but it was just a spark which died soon.

Synopsis:
Itaewon class the extremely popular kdrama of 2020 is about an underdog revenge story.

An ex-con and his friends fight to make their ambitious dreams for their street bar a reality.
Plot:
The 1st episode of itaewon class shows us a flashback 15 years ago.
Park saeroyi in highschool defends a person from a bully; turns out the bully's father is the owner of the school and also a hugely successful business man. Park saeroyis father is an employee in this man's company
Park saeroyi in front of the bully's father is asked to acknowledge his mistake and apologize to which he responds he didn't do anything worng and in turn that gets him expelled.
The bully's father later on goes on to become a main villain in the story.
Park saeroyis father often vists an orphanage where his company gives funds in form of charity and there a girl oh soo ah(kwon nara) who volunteers there ( she too goes to the school where park saeroyi recently got admitted)
The bully that we saw jang geun-won (Ahn Bo-hyun) causes a car accident which kills Park saeroyis father.
The police officer interrupts the mourning, and tell saeroyi that the driver who killed his Dad turned himself in this morning.
The police officer shares the paperwork and settlement agreement. He falls to the ground in distress, and Soo-ah takes over for him.
She picks up the paperwork and recognizes the car in the photo through the “7777” license plate. She tells Sae-ro-yi that the car belongs to jang Geun-won.
Saeroyi rushes to find jang gueun won and fight erupts between them. Saeroyi is almost about to hit him on the head with a rock but at the last minute cops show up along with soo ah
Saeroyi is sent to prison for 2years. After his release he goes to meet so aah in itaewon. They part ways and we skip to 7 years later.
So aah is now working at Jang Ga the company of our dear villain.
Saeroyi is now setting up his new bar Danbam which means chestnut or sweet night and while working there, so aah runs into him.
Saeroyi works with his staff of two ma yeon hi(lee joo young) and choi seung gwon( ryu kyung soo).
Ma yeon hi is later revealed to be a transgender and her storyline is interesting as we get to see how society holds prejudice over a trans person while choi seung gwon is an ex convict.
Rest of the three characters that join danbam later are jang gueon soo ( kim dong hi) , jo yi seo( kim da mi) who are friends. Gueon soo also has unrequited feelings for jo yi seo but soon yi seo seo starts to develop feelings for saeroyi. The third character is kim toni (chris lyon).
Jo yi seo's character is explained as a sociopath by her friend gueon soo and he ( we find out later in the show)is the other son of jang dae hee our villain. Kim toni is a black man who is half korean( his fathers fathers side) and has come to itaewon to find his father.( Who as we come to know later died in a car accident years ago)
With Yi seo having a crush of saeroyi and sareoyi liking so aah (who though not stated explicitly we see she likes him back too) we get a love triangle. Its actually not quite predictable who will end up with who unlike our usual kdramas where we knows who is the main lead and who is the second lead.
The story moves forward with saeroyis main aim being to become more powerful than Jang ga company.
This team of misfits work their way up and in the end succeed and reach their goal.
Each character is unique and special to the story. Several topics such as racism, classicism, transphopia, bullying, abuse of powers etc are explored in this 16 episode kdrama that went on to be an international hit.
Based on the theory of parallel universes where there is a constitutional monarchy ruling the (parallel) nation, a political plot to the assassinate the king takes place.
The coup is thwarted by the sudden appearance of a unknown person, who saves the life of the young heir to the throne, but drops a policewoman's ID tag on the scene.
The killer then escapes to another world, using a piece of a stolen mystical half flute like artifact.
Years later, still obsessed with finding the identity of his mysterious savior, the young prince now king discovers the portal to the other world, crosses over, and finds the person who's ID he found on that unfortunate night.
Plot:
Kingdom of Corea, Winter of 1994Lee Lim and his gang of rebels enter the palace to kill the King ; Lee Lim's brother.
They kill him and Lee Lim picks up a mystical artifact which is mentioned in the synopsis Manpasikjeok which looks like a flute.
In the midst of all this Lee Lims son Lee Gon around 12 years old walks in the room and sees his father is dead.
Lee Gon the assasin tries to kill the child prince but soon someone who's masked walks in and starts firing bullets and saves the young crown prince but drops an ID card of a policewoman; while Lee Lim escapes with half of the flute, that then opens a door to the parallel universe i.e Republic of Korea.
As Lee Gon is next in line for king he is crowned as king the next day and meets jo yeong also around the same age as him and we find out later that he becomes the bodyguard.
Republic of Korea Winter of 1994; Lee Lim has now escaped from Kingdom of Corea after killing his brother the former king.
When he lands in this universe he meets his brother from this universe and goes ahead and kills him, the person who is him in this universe is paralyzed he kills him too and he dumps the dead body of his look alike in Kingdom of Corea so people might think hes dead.
The uncle of Lee Gon who is a doctor in Kingdom of Corea gives a false statement to stop the chaos in the country that Lee Lim is dead even though the body that turned up looked like Lee Lims but the dna was different.
He finds out about Lee Gon of this universe and kills the child too. He lets Lee Gons mother live (Lee Gons mother in Kingdom of Corea had died long ago) who he plans to use later as an example and reveal about the two universes to People of Corea and take down the king in process and rule in his place. Though the main motive Lee Lim wants the flute is to become immortal.
Fast forward to 2019 Kingdom of Corea now has a constitutional monarchy. New characters are introduced.
Prime minister Go seo ryung, Bodyguard Jo yeong, A Photographer turned member of PR team of the royal family.
Lee Gon still is looking for the person in the ID card but since its from another universe he doesn't find anyone. Soon he sees a person in a rabbit hoodie and follows them and lands in a similar place that we saw Lee Lim land and since Lee Gon had half of Manpasikjeok the door to the parallel opens to him too and he crosses over to Republic of Korea and meets her.
Republic of Korea 2019 shows us the person in the ID card is Jeong Tae eul who is a police officer.
We also see more characters like Kang shin jae and Jo eun sop two of them are look-a-like of the ones we saw in Kingdom of Corea.
The story:
Lee Lim for 25 years has been building an army, he offers people a chance for better life with a condition that they have to kill their counterparts and take their place.
Now to bring balance back to the world Lee Gon and the good people start their work.
Time Travel. Lee Gon time travels along with Jo Yeong back to the assassination night and things change a bit.
This time Lee Lim gets the entire Manpasikjeok and the half that Lee Gon has disappears in his hand and the the other half that the future Lee Lim had(which now Jeong Tae Eul took from him) disappears too.
Lee Gon kills Lee Lim and in the place called the middle Tae Eul shoots the future Lee Lim. So now Lee Gon has the entire Manpasikjeok.
Shin jae is actually from Kingdom of Corea and was brought by Lee Lim when he was a child.
The Shin jae of Republic of Korea had met with an accident which had put him in a coma and therefore since then he was in a coma (only his father knew about this as he made a deal with Lee Lim years ago)
Yo-yo kid that we've seen before, morphs into a young man who claims the door will close but the memories will remain.
We see more flashes of yo-yo kid at various ages in the kingdom and the republic.
Turns out HE IS THE MANPASIKJEOK. Now he contemplates whether the memories should remain or not and as we see more of the story; turns out he decided to let them keep their memories.
Lee Rim’s body disintegrates in the between place, and Tae-eul comes to an understanding that Lee Gon succeeded but cries when she assumes he can’t return.
Now since everything becomes balanced all the things that were changed because of traveling back and forth go back to before we see that in 1994, the scar on Gon’s neck disappears.
In the republic, Shin-jae disappears from a group photo.
While Jeong Tae Eul and Lee Gon remember each other others don't with the exception of Jo yeong.
Now with the entire power of Manpasikjeok in his hands as promised before once Lee Gon opens doors to all universes trying to find Jeong Tae eul. Finally they meet and hes surprised to see she remembers him.
They get back together!! Aww can you imagine that kind of love where your lover travels to all the universes to find you! XD
The rest of the characters got a happy ending too. Nari and Eun sop are married and luna and shin jae are at the start of a romance story. Jo yeong and counterpart of nari have started dating. Lee gon and tae Eul travel back-and-forth every now and then and more in love than ever!!! Yayy happy ending!

The 2nd part of the episode takes us further into the story.
Wa-tee's and his mother used to stay together now that she has died Wa-tee is extremely lonely.
He has no friends or relatives on top of all that he is in debt and if he doesn't pay fast enough he might lose the house.
So he puts an advertisement on Facebook to rent his house.
Five people come and start staying together and the last person to come to stay is mae-tee.
He says even though the house is full he's ready to sleep anywhere and still pay full rent.
Since Wa-tee needs money he agrees.
Now Mae tee is afraid of ghosts so he shifts into wae tees room with t-rex and wae tee sleeps in the living room on the sofa.
Next day wae tee gives a set of rules
1. You can't pay rent later than the 1st of every month
2.Do not come out of your room after midnight
3.Do not move stuff that doesn't belong to you
4.without permission you can't go in someone elses room
5.Do not bring strangers into the house
6.You must keep this house clean
7.You will be fined 100bhat for any garbage outside the bin
8. you will be fined 500 bhat for leaving lights on unnecessarily
9. You'll be fined 10000bhat for putting on the stove after midnight
10.if you leave the water running you'll be fined 1 million bhat
Wae tee then says that he forgot to add one more rule that he can sack any one of them anytime
A girl comes asking for tee next day and wae tee says theres no one
She then askes t rex whos coming from outside if theres a tee in there he says she should call him and ask him to come outside because everyone living here is tee
Then comes Tee- det who and when she asks him about tee he gets uncomfortable and also vomits he goes inside and the girl follows him to ask if hes okay but he faints.
